 Speech Therapy FAQ`S

What is voice therapy?

Voice therapy is a specialised area within speech and language therapy.

The focus is on finding out why you may have a problem with your voice and working with you to improve it. It is about learning strategies to support your voice.

Voice therapy has to look at all aspects of voice production, from your anatomy, lifestyle and general health to your emotional state.

Why do I have a voice problem?

Voice problems arise from a variety of issues. People generally tend to get away with some “bad habits” for years, but then a further strain (maybe a cold) affects the system and your voice goes hoarse, or disappears on you.

Why do I have to see an ENT consultant?

Sometimes a voice problem can be an indicator of a growth in the larynx (voice box). This possibility always needs to be checked out, so I ask that all of my clients are assessed by an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant.

If you would like an appointment with me, but have not yet seen and ENT consultant I can assess your voice, give advice and then ask your GP to refer you to ENT for their opinion.

The ENT consultant will also be able to give useful information on the movement of your vocal cords.

What is reflux?

Gastro-oesphageal reflux disease (GORD) generally results in hearburn and can be quite easily diagnosed.

Laryno-pharyngeal reflux (LPR)  - also known as “Silent Reflux” can be much harder to diagnose as you can have it with no obvious symptoms.

LPR is a major cause of voice problems and has also been linked with poorly controlled astma. Even without a voice problem it can make you feel uncomfortable.

Do I have reflux?

Do you cough or clear your throat a lot?

Do you have a problem with coughing after you eat or after lying down?

Do you have excess throat mucus or postnasal drip?

Do you have asthma?

Do you get heartburn, chest pain, indigestion, or stomach acid coming up?

You may have acid reflux.

What can you do to help?

I can help with the diagnosis of LPR and can support both your GP’s medical (medicine) management and lifestyle adaptations needed to resolve your reflux.

People who have attended reflux management support sessions with me have said that once it had improved, they felt so much better in themselves, and realised quite how bad they had felt before.
